What is SEO?
To understand why SEO is important for your business’s success, you must first understand what it is and how it works.
SEO is a compilation of strategies, best practices, and actions that optimize your web pages for organic searches.
The goal of SEO is to rank at the top of SERP (Search Engine Results Page).
For example, you have an eCommerce site that sells gluten-free sprinkled donuts. You would want to rank on the first page for “gluten-free sprinkled donuts”. The strategies you use and the actions you take to improve your website’s position on search engine results are all a part of SEO.
How does SEO work?
Search engines like Google rank your website's pages for SEO value. There are other search engines like Bing or Yahoo that you can optimize for, but for this guide, we will focus more on Google.
Google has its own algorithm and ranking factors so covering all the factors for each search engine would just be too much for one guide.
It’s important to note that optimizing for other search engines such as Bing and Yahoo still have their place as well. And we also can help with Bing and Yahoo SEO.
So back to Google. Did you know that Google has over 200 SEO ranking factors?
Yep, it’s true.
Some of these factors include:
- Page speed
- Content quality
- On-page SEO
- Organic click-through rate
- Domain authority
- Location and settings
And each of these factors holds a specific weight in your overall SEO ranking and determines what pages rank well in Google’s search engine results.
For example, you are competing in a Master’s of the Ocean competition. You must compete in surfing, kiteboarding, and windsurfing.
Just because you win the surf portion of the competition doesn’t mean that you win the whole competition. It depends on how well you perform in each category and takes into consideration your overall performance.
That is how SEO is ranked through Google-- It’s ranked by your overall performance. And your overall SEO ranking is comprised of the value from each factor.
We realize the thought of over 200 ranking factors is a bit overwhelming. But not to worry because that’s why we are here to help you with all your SEO needs.

How search engines work.
Search engines are like an online library that indexes and organizes web pages. And their goal is to give whoever is searching on Google the best and most relevant information they can.
So when someone types in “hardwood flooring near me” on Google, Google’s algorithm will run a search through all the relevant web pages to give the best results based on a webpage’s overall SEO performance.
And you want to be the one ranking high on those SERPs (search engine results pages) because that’s how your customers find you online. Ranking high on Google search results drives organic search traffic to your site, giving your site more authority and ultimately more business.
3 types of SEO
There are different kinds of SEO and different SEO strategies that your business will need to utilize to get the best results. And Rocket Park can help you determine which strategies are best for your business goals and which ones will produce optimal results.
On-page SEO is where you optimize the content on your website to rank higher and get more relevant traffic to your site. And by more relevant traffic, we mean traffic from the people who are going to buy from you.
Optimizing the pages on your website is referred to as on-page SEO because it has to do with anything you can control on your own website that will improve your page rank.
On-page SEO refers to things like:
- Meta descriptions
- Title tags
- Outbound and internal links
- SEO-optimized content
If on-page SEO is anything you can optimize on your own site to boost SEO ranking, then Off-page SEO is what you do outside of your website to improve your SERP.
Optimizing off-page SEO has to do with increasing search engines and potential customer’s perception of your site's expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness, sometimes referred to as the acronym, “EAT”.
Most of the time, off-page SEO refers to “backlinks”. Obtaining backlinks helps build relationships between your website and others. And it also helps Google find your content and assess it’s SEO value.
So how do you do this?
You can achieve backlinks by writing quality content that shows you’re a trustworthy source and an expert in the subject. Doing this may be enough for people to find your content and link to it.
However, sometimes people will go a step further by reaching out to other sites who would benefit from linking to their high-quality content. This is called the Skyscraper technique and some people have found it to be beneficial for optimizing their off-site SEO efforts.
Other off-site SEO also include things like:
- Social media marketing
- Influencer marketing
- Guest blogging
Technical SEO refers to optimizing anything to do with your website outside of content and deals with the back-end and technical side of your website. The goal is to improve user experience and readability so search engines such as Google can easily understand your website and what it’s about, helping your site rank higher.
Technical SEO deals with:
- Site speed
- Site architecture and data
SEO strategies that will help your business
This is a big one for those of you who sell goods and/or services locally.
So going with the hardwood flooring example again, let’s say you have a service-based hardwood flooring company in Nashville, TN. You want to rank high for keywords like “hardwood flooring”. But you would also want to rank well for “hardwood flooring” in your local area or areas that you service, which in this case would be Nashville, TN.
What would be the point of driving people to your site that live in California? You would not be able to sell them your services. So it’s important for you to not only get more organic traffic but the right kind of traffic.
Did you know that 52% of global internet traffic comes from mobile devices and it's projected that more than 60% of Google searches will be performed on a mobile device this year?
Google has started indexing mobile versions of websites, and for this reason, it’s important to optimize your mobile SEO for Google search engine.
When it comes to mobile SEO, you’ll want to make sure that your website is optimized for mobile devices like cell phones and tablets. This means that you’ll need to make sure your site displays correctly, loads quickly, and is easy to navigate on a mobile device.
At Rocket Park, we love working with eCommerce businesses. SEO for eCommerce shops is a little different because they have more robust websites and more pages than a website with just blog content.
Main things to consider when doing SEO for eCommerce:
- Optimize your homepage, category pages, and products pages for the right keywords
- Develop SEO-optimized content marketing
- Display the right schema for your products
- Optimize all visuals like videos and pictures on your site
- Devise creative strategies to get links on your product pages
SEO done right
SEO can be a tricky thing…
Trust us, we know. We’ve heard horror stories of people working with SEO companies only to find out they were using a one-size-fits-all strategy that wasn’t getting results or even worse, using what we call “black hat SEO” strategies.
Black hat SEO
If SEO companies promise you unrealistic results and/or too-good-to-be-true pricing, then they might be using black hat SEO. These strategies are meant to trick search engines like Google into giving a higher SEO value.
For example, you start keyword stuffing for phrases that you know have good ranking value into your content and website. This not only can discredit you, but it also looks bad to potential clients.
Have you ever read something and thought, wow this person is just trying to fit keywords into an article?
I know we have. And it’s a quick way to get penalized by Google. And trust us, you don’t want that. It’s hard to dig yourself out of that hole, and you may never rank well again.
So just use Google-approved strategies from the beginning. It’s not worth the risk to use sketchy, black hat strategies.
Which brings us to the next kind of SEO.
White hat SEO
White hat refers to all the strategies that are compliant with Google’s rules and policies. Everything in this guide (outside of black hat SEO) is considered white hat so you don’t have to worry about being penalized by using any of the strategies mentioned. White hat SEO is also called, “ethical SEO”.
Is SEO important for every business?
We understand that there are a lot of different types of businesses out there, all with different marketing needs. But one thing’s for sure…
Every business could benefit from utilizing SEO.
But what if your business has little competition and/or you are already ranking # 1, could you still benefit from using SEO?
I bet you can guess the answer is YES.
Not only is SEO beneficial to every business, but it’s also important to note that the ranking factors are always changing and new competition is always popping up.
So just because you rank well now or you don’t have much competition now, doesn’t mean that these things won't change in the future. You need the right knowledge and the time to consistently update your SEO strategies.
And with the right SEO agency in your corner, SEO is a great investment for your business's online presence.
